What does freedom sound like?
Experience an electrifying evening as the powerful voices of VOENA fill the Downtown Theatre in a bold spring concert celebrating freedom of expression, cultural identity, and the beauty of our differences. Voices of Freedom is a musical journey exploring the many meanings of freedom across cultures, histories, and human stories through song, rhythm, and movement.
This dynamic performance weaves together global sounds and contemporary energy, inviting audiences to reflect, celebrate, and connect through music that transcends boundaries.
Joining VOENA are extraordinary guest artists Drumdala and Japanese Taiko, creating an immersive, high-energy experience. Drumdala, the signature audio-visual percussion project by world-renowned artist Richard Sherwood, blends tribal rhythms and global drum traditions into a powerful sensory journey that has captivated audiences around the world.
Japanese Taiko drumming brings a commanding presence to the stage, uniting movement, rhythm, and spirit. Taiko uses the drumstick as an extension of the self, channeling physical power and spiritual energy into sound. This spring, VOENA is joined by Taiko Drummer David Gonzalez, who carries the lineage and wisdom of Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka, the father of taiko in America. Alongside Mr. Gonzalez is Heidi Varian, a renowned Taiko artist and author of The Way of Taiko, who brings her deep knowledge of Taiko’s rich history and cultural significance. David, a respected local Taiko artist, has appeared in films such as Return of the Jedi and performed at renowned venues including Zellerbach Hall and Carnegie Hall.
At the heart of the evening is VOENA’s mission: Uniting the world with children’s voices. With singers representing over 35 cultures, VOENA has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including the White House (for Presidents Clinton and Bush), Carnegie Hall, the London Olympics, and the World Expo in Japan.
Audiences are not just listeners—they are surrounded by sound, spirit, and meaning. Voices of Freedom is an inspiring spring celebration that uplifts, challenges, and reminds us of the power of music to give voice to who we are.
