What does freedom sound like?
Join VOENA for an electrifying afternoon celebrating freedom of expression, cultural identity, and unity through song and rhythm. Voices of Freedom explores the many meanings of freedom across cultures and histories, featuring powerful performances from VOENA’s diverse singers and global guest artists. This inspiring concert is held in the stunning St. Peter’s Chapel, home to historic Tiffany stained glass windows.
Special guests include Drumdala, the immersive percussion project by Richard Sherwood, and Japanese Taiko. Taiko brings a commanding presence to the stage, uniting movement, rhythm, and spirit. This spring, Taiko Drummer David Gonzalez joins VOENA, carrying the legacy and wisdom of Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka, the father of taiko in America. A respected local Taiko artist, David has appeared in films such as Return of the Jedi and performed at renowned venues including Zellerbach Hall and Carnegie Hall.
The Taiko performance is further enriched by Heidi Varian, a highly regarded Taiko artist and author of The Way of Taiko. Heidi’s deep understanding of Taiko’s cultural significance and her mastery of the art form adds a special layer to the performance, creating an unforgettable experience for the audience.
VOENA’s mission… Uniting the world with children’s voices, shines through as they bring global music traditions to life in one of the oldest Navy chapels on the West Coast.
